Contact Jennifer Hamlin Church in the alumni office. 1970s Phyllis Gabriel Hoban ‘70 teaches radio and television, theatre production and drama at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Detroit and is the Detroit high school winner of the Newsweek-WDIV Outstanding Teacher Award. She taught for 18 years in Detroit-area Catholic schools before moving into the public school system 10 years ago, first at Henry Ford high school and now at King. In an article in the Detroit Federation of Teachers newsletter, she remembered her days as the only black drama student and the only black in her senior class at Siena, and recalled her studies with Sr. Therese Craig: “She was very strict and demanded so much of me. At first I thought she was racist, then I realized she only wanted me to be the best I could be. She taught me so much and I’ve never forgotten her.” Mary Phillips ‘72 and husband Rick Sayre traveled through France and Belgium in May and toured Italy in November. “Otherwise, we’re busy at our jobs at Phillips University” in Enid, Okla., where Mary is professor of art and Rick is librarian.
