Creative students and graduates from
Edinburgh Napier enjoyed incredible success at
a number of award cere monies during 2016.
D&AD New Blood Awards
Our BDes (Hons) Graphic Design students won Best Stand at the
prestigious D&AD New Blood Awards for the third year running.
The London event, which showcases the design and advertising
stars of the future, also saw the University run up an impressive
haul of individual awards.
Meanwhile, students from the design/photography/advertising
subject group also did the University proud with four big wins
at the Creative Conscience Awards at the rooftop offices of the
Unilever Building in London.
Senior staff in the School of Arts & Creative Industries said our
winners at the D&AD New Blood event at London’s Truman
Brewery were up against a truly international field.

Creative Conscience Awards
The following students and graduates received Gold Awards at
the Creative Conscience Awards in London, hosted by Sir Jonathon
Porritt. They emerged as winners from more than 500 entries
after being judged by influential industry practitioners.

Individual ‘One to Watch’ notes went to Lewis Brooks and
Natasha Broomfield both BDes (Hons) Graphic Design students.

Meanwhile, in photography Anete Atvare, Elina Kadirzhova, Susan McFadzean, Katie
Matthews, Anete Tisanova & Denitsa Toshirova, Graduands,
2016 BA (Hons) Photography, were invited to exhibit at DECK
Gallery in Singapore in July as part of a collaboration between
Nanyung Technological University and Edinburgh Napier.

BA (Hons) Photography, was selected for Futureproof, best of
Scottish Photography graduates in Scotland 2016, and exhibited
at The Lillie Gallery Ayr in July.
Kirsty Mclachlan, BA (Hons) Photography student was selected
from open submission to exhibit in ‘Images from Mongolia’ at
Edinburgh Castle organised by Friends of Scotland/Mongolia and
the Embassy of Mongolia, in London.

graduate highlights
Congratulations to MFA graduate Ben Sharrock who landed
the prestigious Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature
Film. His work stood out amongst the 160 features and
130 short films screened at this year’s 70th edition of the
Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Product Design graduate Kate Caven was nominated for
“Young Innovator of the Year” for her business Kids Creative
as part of the Made in Scotland awards. Kate came up with
the idea for the children’s furniture business after graduating
in 2015 and launched the company at the Scottish Learning
Festival in Glasgow.
There was a double celebration for 24-year-old Sarah Vesty
who was crowned Young Journalist of the Year twice. Sarah,
who now works at the Daily Record, first won the award at
her employer’s Trinity Mirror Excellence Awards in London
before going on to win the same title at the annual Scottish
Newspaper Society Awards in Glasgow.
Associate Professor, Sandy Walker, added the prestigious
Red Dot Award to his list of accomplishments and successes.
Sandy has had an impressive career across the world since
completing his BSc in Industrial Design & Technology in 1980,
and now works for Flinders University in South Australia.
Sophie Gerrard, Lecturer, who was commissioned by The Drug
Discovery Unit at the University of Dundee, to mark the 10th
anniversary of the Unit, had her work on public display outside the
facilities in Dundee.
