There are shampoos on the market to
treat dry, oily, fine, limp, coarse, permed,
lightened, relaxed, or chemically treated
and natural hair. The following are various
characteristics of (and qualities found
within) certain shampoos:
Acid Balanced (to treat colored hair)
Moisturizing (to make the hair shiny and
smooth)
Medicated (to reduce dandruff or other
scalp conditions)
Clarifying or Purifying (to help cut through
and remove build up)
Balancing (washes away excessive oils)
Dry or powder (cleanses the hair without
soap and water)
Color enhancing (used to brighten, add
color too and to eliminate unwanted color
tones)
A conditioner is a special agent applied to
the hair to provide moisture or protein to
help restore strength, give it body and
protect against breakage. Apply deep
conditioners for treatment and repair of
hair. A deep conditioner is left on the hair
for 10 to 20 minutes to restore moisture
and protein. A leavein conditioner is
applied to the hair and not rinsed out. A
Crème rinse conditioner is used for
detangling and is rinsed out afterwards,
while hair masks and conditioning packs
are used to treat severely damaged hair.

When preparing wet hair after rinsing out the
conditioner lightly towel it dry without a lot of
roughness or rubbing to prevent detangling.
Detangle hair from the ends, working your way
up. Sit underneath the hair dryer for at least 20
minutes to remove excess moisture if it is your
desire to blowdry the remainder of your hair
prior to styling. This helps prevent excessive
breakage and shedding of the hair. Part the
hair into uniform sections and blowdry each
section until all of them are complete.
Here is a list of habits to avoid when it comes to
your hair maintenance and management:
Not maintaining your hair on your own in
between beauty salon visits:
Maintaining your hair in between salon visits is
very important. Purchase the products for home
maintenance from your stylist and follow their
instructions for use. Always seek professional
advice if you have questions or concerns.
Hot curling or flat ironing your hair daily:
Excessive use of heating tools will eventually
cause breakage, shedding, frizz, dryness,
broken hair damage and split ends. Use these
tools on the lowest heat possible and not every
day. Also, use a heat protectant that shields
hair from damage and frizzes. Stay away from
products with alcohol and proteins in them, for
they tend to dry out the hair more often. This
depletes the hair of the moisture it needs. If the
tool will burn your skin, it will burn your hair.
Less is better!
