She was my high school English teacher many years ago at a time when Negroes became African American and were just beginning to accept themselves as unique individuals and women were being liberated from the kitchen. She was young, ambitious and a driving force to be reckoned with. She was such a great influence in my life and is a big part of who I have become not only as a writer but as a person who unapologetically embraces the possibilities of who and what I can become.

It's amazing to me what the power of what one person can do by touching the life of another. She was that kind of person. What she taught her students transcended far beyond the classroom. What she taught us couldn't be found in books. What she left us with was the power of belief in ourselves and the knowledge that we alone had the power to control our own destinies. She empowered her students with both book knowledge and a sense of pride and confidence in self and the world around them.

After teaching for more than forty years, Ms. Perryman retired at the top of her game. And as I look back over the roster of names whom she has guided along the way I am even more impressed by how the same lessons she taught me forty years ago were still changing the lives of new generations of children. But her life did not stop there.

Ms. Perryman has enjoyed a successful writing career Her first book, “Mood Swings and Magic Carpet Rides,” chronicled a love relationship with the theme: “Don’t put the responsibility of your happiness in anyone else’s hands.” Her second book, “Moods for You,” delves into phases of the emotional development of women. Her latest book is “Tender Ravings,” an exploration of the diverse emotional paths we take as we grow into our true selves. For seven years she was a columnist for a suburban Detroit newspaper. She has been well recognized locally and nationally. She has received several “Spirit of Detroit” Awards, recognition as the local NAACP’s Most Outstanding Member. She was Daimler Chrysler Corporation’s featured poet for the company’s “Spirit in the Words” program, which received The President’s Citation by Poets and Writers Magazine at a ceremony in New York City.

Recently Ms. Perryman co-wrote and directed the short film WAGES. This film highlighted one of the atrocities that befall some American military women as they serve in overseas. She continues to mentor many in the entertainment industry and was the primary casting director for the feature film CornerStore and several other films.

Ms. Perryman has also completed the book “She Who Limps is Still Walking.” This inspirational story deals with her recovery from paralysis and the constant replenishing of her spirit in order to help others realize their personal potential. Besides performing poetry in her own unique style, Brenda speaks on a number of topics ranging from parenting and arts advocacy to domestic violence and women’s inspirational issues.

Brenda Perryman, thank you for a lifetime of learning and inspiration. I love the fact that I met you as a young girl and have had the pleasure of growing into womanhood with you. You are one of my Sheros!
