WISDOM FOR EVERYDAY LIFE
Our
village
has been
taking a
lot of hits
lately…
murders of very young children, rapes of our
women, deadly accidents and other forms of
violence cause us to question, “Where is God
in all of this?” But, God often sends us angels
to do His bidding here on Earth. These
modern day heroes and sheroes are those
who rush into danger that everyone else
flees. So, let’s take a moment to bring
recognition and honor to some little-known
names and organizations.
The first organization I would like to honor is
The Nation of Islam (NOI), under the
guidance of the Honorable Minister Louis
Farrakhan. The Nation, as it is known around
the world, has a vibrant prison ministry
which helps returning citizens to re-enter
society in a productive manner. The Minister
recently urged communities across the
country to ban together to form “10,000
fearless men and women” who would bring
peace to their neighborhoods. To achieve
this, The Nation is opening conflict resolution
centers in every urban American city. These
centers are “safe spaces,” where citizens can
come and get beefs resolved or learn conflict
resolution skills. Led by Minister Farrakhan’s
local representative, Student Minister Troy
Muhammad, Student Captains Roy and
Missey Muhammad, along with the members
of Muhammad’s Mosque No. 1 (The Nation’s
official Detroit location), the Nation
continues to make a strong impact on Detroit
and Detroiters.
The next organization I would like to
acknowledge is
NEW ERA
DETROIT (NED).
NEW ERA
founded in Detroit in 2014, began a
neighborhood patrol called “Streets
Is Watching.” This program has men
and women from the community who
volunteer, five days a week, to patrol
neighborhoods around Noble
Elementary school. Ordinary people
escort youth to and from school
everyday.
The remarkable thing is they do this
for no compensation, just out of the
goodness of their hearts and a strong
commitment to secure their own
neighborhoods. They also conduct a
program called “Hood2Hood,” where
they visit every zip code in Detroit
throughout the warmer months, to
connect and problem solve with
residents. The vision of President
Zeek Ned and Vice President Negus
Vu is to elevate Detroit’s
environment to a higher level…
providing safe streets for all,
ensuring entrepreneurial
opportunities for Blacks, facilitating
an overhaul of the educational
system and empowering the people
to embrace change.
