Focus On Your Base Nutrition in the New Year

Keeping up with good health habits through the holiday season may seem a bit like navigating an obstacle course overlying a mine field. Between the celebrations, the over eating and indulgence, and the urge to ignore the morning alarm clock, many find it difficult to stay on routine this time of the year. Regardless, here we are…we all made it to the New Year.

At this point in time, I generally see 3 defined types of patients…those that were able to generally maintain their routine (the few), those that have “fallen off the wagon” and are determined to get back on (the many), and the ones that have just given up (the lost)…easy to spot as they refuse to wear anything but sweatpants/sweatshirts. Regardless of what category you find yourself, the New Year is a great time to get back to basics and relative to nutrition, a good goal is to focus on getting your base diet under control. There are certainly a lot of aspects of nutrition that can be focused on such as calorie counting, caloric ratio, elimination diets, acid/alkaline balance, lipid profiling, etc., etc., etc. I find that those that tend to get caught up in the minutia of the details in any particular aspect of nutrition miss the bigger picture. So my advice at this time of the year is for you to step back and take a broad look at your nutrition. Once you have your base diet under control you can begin to hone in on some of the more detailed aspects of your diet if you feel necessary.
