BRINGING BRAZIL'S EXPERIENCE TO
U.S. FOOD POLICY COUNCILS
We were deeply inspired by the work in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, to
eradicate hunger featured in M. Jahi Chappell’s book Beginning
to End Hunger and wanted to share the book’s message with
good food advocates across the country. With support from a
Small Planet Fund grant, we gifted nearly 100 copies to directors
of Food Policy Councils in the United States. One of the first cities
in the world to have a food policy council, Belo Horizonte’s story
is about working to democratize the food system and ensure
access to good, healthy food as a basic right. Sent along with the
transcript of our interview with Jahi and materials about the Good
Food Purchasing Program, our outreach was an opportunity to
thank Food Policy Council leaders for their work, highlight Belo
Horizonte’s remarkable efforts to end hunger, and share
information about another concrete strategy right here in the
United States, the Good Food Purchasing Program.
REAL FOOD FILMS
ORGANIZING TOOLKITS
When we launched Real Food Films’ international short films
contest in 2013, we had no idea the response we’d get. With 440
films from 34 states and 31 countries, we were blown away by all
of the incredible stories. Over the three years since—at more than
350 events around the world and on our social media—we heard
one question again and again: How can I take action?
The Real Food Films Organizing Toolkits are our answer to that
question, offering a way for people to dig in and learn about key
issues and how to tackle them. We started with three issues that
responded to what most ignited Real Food Films followers’
passion and curiosity: taking on Big Soda, tackling climate change
through food, and building power with food workers.
Each of the free Toolkits includes:
A film reel of suggested short films to screen
A discussion guide
Educational materials
Suggested activities
A glossary of key terms
Ideas for ways to get active
Recipes to prepare for or with your group
