PHILANTHROPIC ENGAGEMENT
Alongside her work with Real Food Media, Anna Lappé continued her complementary
grantmaking work through the Small Planet Fund and the Panta Rhea Foundation,
building on synergy across these projects. The Small Planet Fund supports grassroots
food system changemakers around the country through a strategic grantmaking portfolio
of nearly $100,000 a year. In addition to emergency, rapid response, and base-building
grants, the Fund deploys resources to host community events and funder briefings for
partners. Through networking at Real Food Media, we’ve gathered many of the best
ideas for our impact grants: for instance, we offered a grant this year to the Alameda
County Food Bank to support their culturally appropriate nutrition education program for
clients, developed by the authors of Decolonize Your Diet, which we learned about
through Real Food Reads.
This year marked the third year of Anna’s role as the founder and director of the Food and
Democracy Program at the Panta Rhea Foundation. In that role, Anna has worked on a
number of initiatives with synergies between the communications strategy of Real Food
Media. In particular, she has been working with funder partners to launch the Castanea
Fellowship —a new leadership program with a focus on skills-building, including
communications—and a re-launch of the Food and Farm Communications Fund.
