EVENTS We think that one of the best ways for us to shape the story of food is to connect with people in person. In 2018, we continued our participation in conferences and webinars and in keynote addresses to students at campus visits around the country. We also partnered with movement allies to use our event organizing expertise to help elevate their work. Real Food Media participated in 23 events; of those, Anna Lappé spoke at 16 events reaching over 1,800 people directly. SPECIAL EVENTS Good Food Purchasing Program Exchange with Local Coalitions from Buffalo and Chicago Chicago, IL, September 6-7 Over the course of two days, the local coalition advancing the Good Food Purchasing Program in Buffalo, NY, joined the Chicago Food Policy Action Council for a deep dive on the strategies that led to four (!) Program adoptions since 2017 at the school district, city, and county-wide levels in Illinois. The days were filled with buzzing conversations and eager exchanges around conference tables and greenhouses. Proof that there is no substitute for the relational nature of this work! Christina accompanied the exchange and captured video and reflections during site visits, including interviews with coalition members about the importance of centering racial equity— something Chicago has been a leader on. Minneapolis Public Schools Farm to School Community BBQ Minneapolis, MN, September 12 Tanya spent a gorgeous late-summer afternoon at Minneapolis Public Schools Culinary & Wellness Services HQ with members of the Twin Cities Good Food Purchasing Program coalition. We asked youth and families what kind of school food they want to see and they did not hold back! We also sampled delicious seasonal foods from Minneapolis Public Schools food vendors and celebrated MPS for making great strides in creating transparency and fairness in school food procurement. Real Food Reads Live! in Conversation with Marion Nestle, Unsavory Truth San Francisco, CA, November 17 Real Food Media loves decoding corporate spin, and we were obviously excited to hear about Marion Nestle’s latest book, Unsavory Truth: How Food Companies Skew the Science of What We Eat. We partnered with CUESA to bring the conversation to a live audience at their Saturday Ferry Plaza Farmers Market as Tiffani spoke with Marion for the first live recording of Real Food Reads.
