When I sit down with an Image Doctor client the first question I ask is "What do you do for work mate".

Whilst I care a great deal about each of my Image Doctor clients and genuinely love to get to know them on a personal level, this first and most important question is very much a practical question which forms the basis of how I’ll help that client manage his image reputation in order to best serve his level of professional success and achievement.

Why do I need to know what type of industry a client works in to know how to best manage his image?

This is because a man in a sales role should wear very different clothing colours to a man in a more creative industry. A man trying to build rapport and flow with a potential client should wear different clothing colours to a man trying to assert dominance and authority over his staff. And a single man going to the bar could utilise clothing colours I wouldn't suggest of an attached man going to pick his kids up from school.

Given the nature of Real Estate Juice, its readers and the fact the industry hinges on sales success or failure, today I'm following up last month’s article of the psychology of clothing colours with a sales specific article on the clothing colours to avoid wearing in sales scenarios where the objective is to:

• Build rapport

• Appear credible and trustworthy

• Leave a positive and lasting impression on potential clients

If you're a first time reader to Real Estate Juice and missed my previous article, I explained that when making buying and business decisions your potential clients will be taking in and deciphering a range of influences on both a conscious and unconscious level.

One of the key unconscious influencers can be the clothing a salesman is wearing in front of a potential client. As humans we form emotional reactions and decisions to a variety of colours we perceive as either negative or positive based on societal influences as well as personal experiences.

So today I'm going to highlight a variety of colours I believe will harm instead of help your chances of picking up that new listing, convincing a fence sitting client to buy or sell and engaging buyers at an auction.

So let's kick off today's discussion with the colour black:
