Watch or Wreck It...
First off, can I give a shout out to my two
lovely kids celebrating birthdays this
month, LOVE YOU BOTH!!
So many books, so little time. My “To Be
Read” list is multiplying faster than I can
read and that is saying something. There
are stacks of books all over my house and
my kids often ask how I decide what to read
next. At any given time I am generally
reading a comic book (currently Daredevil)
with my son, a teen fantasy (we are about
halfway through Hollow City, the second
installment of Miss Peregrine's Peculiar
Children by Ransom Riggs) and a book of
my choosing (just finished City of Saints and
Madmen by Jeff Vandermeer and I'm on to
No One Here Gets Out Alive a Jim Morrison
biography). So, how do I decide? The kids
pick their books and I go with the age old,
proven method of eenie meenie minee moe.
Don't judge me, it works. I do try to make
sure I read books with upcoming movies
(hence the Miss Peregrine books my
daughter has us reading).
Now that I've bored you all with my
breakdown of book selection in our
household, I'll move into my selections for
the week. Actually, let's go with selection.
I've avoided this for a very long time but I
finally gave in following some questions I've
received over the past month. I will preface
this by stating I was unable to finish the
book. Actually, I was unable to read beyond
the first few chapters because the book was
so terrible I couldn't stomach it. I found the
writing style offensive, the female lead
obnoxious and the male lead to be a terrible
turn off. I could not figure out how in the
world the book became such a sensation.
Have you guessed the book yet? Anybody?
Fifty Shades of Grey. Yep. Shocker, I know.
But I did TRY to read it. I really did. After
three emails requesting that I address the
book and movie in this article I couldn't
ignore the heaping pile of dung any longer.
While it was not the first book I couldn't
finish, Fifty Shades is likely the most
memorable because so many people swore
to me I would “just love it” and raved about
how “hot” it was. Um. NO. I pretty much felt
my lady parts closing off and shutting down.
So, I didn't finish the book. I was told
several times that the movie was SO much
better than the book. I forked over $5.99 to
rent it for twenty-four hours from iTunes,
