Create an Efficient Home Office

by CK Kochis

When is the last time you de-cluttered your office? Whether you work at your dining room table in the wee hours of the night or in a professional office setting in a former bedroom, a clutter-free workspace creates an atmosphere of less distractions. We complete tasks more efficiently and in less time when we can visually maintain a clean area.

Purging is one process of de-cluttering your workspace. Remove all non-work items, take the dirty dishes to the kitchen and throw away the things that belong in the trash. If you have children, remove your children’s toys and artwork from your immediate workspace. If the idea of getting rid of your child’s possessions from your space tugs too hard on your heart strings then move it to the side so it’s not in direct view of your work.

Sort through your piles and file important paperwork. This may seem like a simple task, but often times we stack papers with intent to take care of it later. Well, later is NOW.

Three-ring binders are a great solution for filing and storing helpful tips and random instructions that are printed for future use.

Remove all items from the surface of your workspace and clean it. As items are returned to the surface, decide if it is necessary for the majority of the tasks or if it should be placed in a drawer or cabinet until it is needed.

By adopting a cleaning and review routine, maintaining an efficient workspace will create more productivity. Being productive affords us the time to do more things we desire.
