News Best of British 2016 Former England and Arsenal footballer Paul Merson was the special guest at a charity sporting lunch in Gatwick Friday 4 November. The former footballer, who now works as a Sky Sports pundit, attended the Best of British event at the Hilton London Gatwick Hotel, which was raising money for Sussex children’s charity Rockinghorse. Supported by Mayo Wynne Baxter, the afternoon fundraiser welcomed over 220 guests from businesses across Mid-Sussex, who was treated to a three-course lunch followed by an entertaining talk from Paul Merson himself. Award winning IT services specialists Extech were also in attendance as co-sponsors. Guests took part in a number of fundraising games, including ‘heads and tails’, a raffle and an exclusive charity of auction of rare sporting memorabilia. The event raised over £20,000 for Rockinghorse, who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary next year. Funds raised from this year’s Best of British event will be donated towards the charity’s 50th year appeal; ‘Sussex Giving for Sussex Children’. Through the appeal, Rockinghorse has pledged to raise £500,000 in the next 12 months, which will be split between 10 children’s centres and paediatric services across Sussex. 6 Reader Richard Newell took the last issue to Toronto on holiday with him.
