Grand Tour of India THE NEW Alfa Romeo Giulia Could you tell us about your early life and childhood? I never knew my real father; he was French Algerian and was in the French Air Force. He married my mum who was in the WRAF and after the war, whilst my mother was pregnant with me, they went back to Algeria. I do not know what happened but she left him and came back to live with her mother in Suffolk. She was from quite a poor country family in a place called Woodbridge and that’s where she had me. Her mother already had quite a lot of children but she let us stay in that house for about six months In May we got our first glimpse of the new Alfa that is due to be launched in the UK sometime in September 2016. How time flies! It felt like only yesterday that I was setting off on my grand tour around northern Vietnam (see issue 2 – Spring 2013) but where to go next? This new car has distinctive Italian design; innovative powertrains, perfect weight distribution, some unique technical solutions and one of the best weight-to-power ratios. The taut proportions of the Giulia have evolved from its all-new rear-wheel drive architecture which gives the car short overhangs, a long bonnet, muscular haunches and the longest wheelbase in its segment. The Giulia benefits from the careful management of weights and materials to obtain perfect 50/50 weight distribution across its axles too. A full range of all-new, all-aluminium engines power the Alfa Romeo Giulia saloon, putting them at the top of their segment for performance and efficiency. All engines are manufactured in Italy and include two version of a 2.2 turbo diesel producing 150bhp and 180bhp. Clever stuff. until my mother got a job as a kind of housekeeper in a little terrace house for an old man who lived on his own. She kept house for him and let me stay there as well so that was the beginning. It was nice but it was a bit strange to have a funny old man around the place. My Nan was just down the road and my uncles were always very, very good to me and always had a terrific sense of humour. Then my stepfather came along and he had also been in the RAF funnily enough. He had been posted with the Lancasters out to Burma for three years. He joined up when he was about 17 so he had quite an interesting life. My stepdad Terry he…I will not say rescued me, but he took us away from Suffolk because he became an airport policeman. We then lived for three or four years in rooms in other people’s houses while he worked at Northolt Airport and then eventually at Heathrow Airport. In all, we lived in probably about eight or nine difference places. It was difficult - changing schools and losing friends and all that kind of thing but eventually we ended up in a place called Stanwell near Staines on the edge of Heathrow Airport in our own As a gin lover you can imagine my excitement when a big brown box arrived with a label that read “Hello you, are you ready to brew? We hadn’t either, but after our smooth and comfortable 3hr flight to Iceland’s Keflavik airport, my family of four were big fans of this small, modern outfit. Having left a hot and muggy Gatwick in July it was something of a relief to feel the fresher, cooler air and experience the late night summer twilight this close to the Arctic Circle – daylight would start to creep back at about 4.00am.
