This was my first visit to dine at the Hotel du Vin since the recent refurbishment of its Bistro which I had read had been decorated with fresh new colours , soft lighting , new seating but also that they had launched a completely new menu .
Having dined there a couple of times over the years I had previously been impressed with their French home-style cooking , earthy slow-cooked meat dishes , all served up in a hearty style that left you full up . Being called the ‘ hotel of wine ’ they also had a fantastic selection and knowledgeable sommelier so I was looking forward to seeing what was new .
My reviewing partner Jo and I caught up with General Manager , Ben Haynes , before dinner who talked to us enthusiastically about the plans and ideas he has for the hotel and the Bistro ’ s new menu . His enthusiasm was infectious and so when he suggested dishes that we should choose when we dined it seemed churlish to not follow his recommendation .
