and is the centre of village life, reportedly
King Charles stopped there on his way out
of the country following his defeat at the
Battle of Worcester in 1651. The pub is one
of the three oldest in Sussex and dates
back to 1276. It was once visited by a
circus and their elephants but is now better
known for the stunning views from its beer
garden and excellent food.
The most exciting event on the village
calendar is the church fete which is held
annually on the last Saturday in July at
Bury Manor. The fete has grown hugely in
popularity in recent years attracting large
crowds who enjoy the tombola, bric-abrac stall and a cream tea. I always end up
buying more junk than I get rid of which is
all part of the fun. A particular highlight is
the tug of war in which the local farmers
compete against the boys from the garage,
