Human Guinea Pigs “Mr. Edison, please tell me what laboratory rules you want me to observe.” Edison: “There ain’t no rules around here. We’re trying to accomplish somep’n!” — Thomas Edison The science of treating the human body is fascinating and ever changing. Over the last few years we have witnessed the emergence of many exciting developments in the medical field, particularly with biomedical technology pushing innovation to a new frontier. We have seen bionic prosthesis, robotic surgery, needle free diabetes care and even the use of 3D avatars and mapping technology. Any reader of the visionary Jules Verne or fan of science fiction (Avatar springs to mind) will share in the delight of these recent developments. Needless to say, much work and research remains to be done. 42
