THE BRIGHTON & HOVE FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL - VARIOUS LOCATIONS GUYS AND DOLLS - FESTIVAL THEATRE, CHICHESTER brightonfoodfestival.com Until Sunday 21st September Autumn is upon us with its paths, roads and lawns covered in beautifully coloured fallen leaves crunching under foot. Thursday 4th - Sunday 14th September A musical fable of Broadway based on a story and characters of Damon Runyon.Music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, Book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. Guys and Dolls – a joyous and vibrant celebration of Prohibition-era New York – marks a series of firsts when it bursts onto the Festival Theatre stage at Chichester this summer. A slight dip in temperatures is no reason to turn the telly on, vegetate on the sofa and wait for spring, however - certainly not, given the remarkable variety of events happening across Sussex. Rated by the New York Post in February 2012 as one of the world’s leading local food events, it’s the largest festival of its kind in the south of England. With local producers, growers, restaurants, bars and food retailers firmly at its heart, showcasing the fantastic food, drink and hospitality to be found in Sussex. Not only will it be the first time that Guys and Dolls has been staged at Chichester during its 52-year history, it will be the first musical to open in the Festival Theatre following its £22 million redevelopment. The musical also marks debuts at Chichester for director Gordon Greenberg and choreographer Carlos Acosta. Those I have for you here are broad reaching, with hopefully something for everyone. FINDON SHEEP FAIR & VILLAGE FESTIVAL - FINDON findonsheepfair.co.uk Saturday 13th September This is a centuries old glimpse at a now forgotten way of life in Sussex. The Sheep Fair at Findon is one of the longest established continuously held events in England and it’s really important to keep this link with Sussex culture going for future generations. The Fair takes place annually at Findon Village in the heart of Sussex. Take the whole family! Friday Night begins with a ‘proper’ traditional funfair on the green and barn dance in the marquee. Saturday is the fair itself, with free admission. There will be craft, food and produce demonstrations and stalls; sheep displays, sheep judging, a funfair and other displays on the green. Kids can meet the sheep and small animals as well as watch the delightful art of Punch & Judy. cft.org.uk BRIGHTON COMEDY FESTIVAL - THE DOME, CORN EXCHANGE, STUDIO, KOMEDIA AND THE OLD MARKET, BRIGHTON brightoncomedyfestival.com Friday 10th to Saturday 25th October GRUFF RHYS - ST GEORGE’S CHURCH, BRIGHTON This sets out to present the best live comedy of the year and there is no better place in the country to do this than Brighton. The heady air of the seaside combines with some of the world’s funniest people to create a mixture that is unmissable. ticketweb.co.uk Thursday 18th September Possibly one of Brighton’s favourite out-of-town performers, Gruff Rhys returns to the city following his incredible sell out show back in May for the Brighton Festival. Wielding his latest album creation, American Interior, this show doesn’t only promise the Super Furry Animals frontman’s distinct and unusual musical style, but also a highly involved and visual performance. One to get on and book sharpish.
