them, been in them and loved them, been
in them and not got on so well with them,
wanted to leave quite quickly and been
in them, left and gone back. I remember
seeing Jo Joyner’s [EastEnders]script one
day and it was so thick, she had so many
little bits of paper sticking out the side
from what episode it was and this was all
that she was going to be filming the next
week and I just thought, “Wow. Wow.” I’m
someone who does probably too much
prep and I just don’t know how I’d cope.
I’d have to find another way of doing what
I do.
Jason: Another programme that you
were in was Survivors with Julie Graham
who we interviewed for Re: about four
years ago, what was it like working with
Julie?
Dan:
Our paths crossed very little in
the episodes actually. My character came
back I think in the very last episode in
the series. Julie’s great, I’ve known Julie
for years and years. We’ve got a lot of
mutual friends and, of course, the Brighton
connection. So, it’s always nice to work
with a mate.
Julie also did a thing called Walk Away and
I Stumble, which I think it was a two-parter
14
with Tamzin Outhwaite and Mark Strong.
Julie and I had to play a love interest
and we had a scene, which I can’t really
go into, there was an ‘act’ about to be
performed, which ended in her bursting
into tears. It took a good few goes of not
bursting into laughter before we eventually
were able to all keep a straight face. So,
Julie I know really well and Survivors was
great. I think it was again one of these
programmes coming out not quite at the
right time.
Jason: You mentioned a bit about love
scenes there, have you had to do many of
those in your career?
Dan: I’ve climbed on top of Jane
Horrocks and then the scene cuts. I’ve
been naked a number of times on telly
which is always interesting, a lot of them
have been for comedy reasons. I think
mine and Sally’s second day of filming
Mount Pleasant, we were in the bath all
day and whereas, you’ve got a little bit of
modesty there , you’re still in the same
water as another human being who you
don’t know very well, which is kind of
peculiar. We also had to dance round
the kitchen to Fat Boy Slim and I was
completely naked for that. Shot from
behind, thankfully. Thankfully there are rules.
Jason: The bath scene you are talking
about, that bathroom seems like the
biggest bathroom on telly.
Dan:
I know, it does seem like a big
one. It’s not that big… I mean, it has to be
big enough to get a camera on either side
of the bath and it’s a near normal size bath
and there’s no kind of special equipment.
But it became a bit iconic, people were
asking where did the sinks come from,
where was that wallpaper from, is that real
tiling? It became a place that people had
far too much comment on.
Jason: Have there been any roles that
you just think, “I wish I hadn’t done that”?
Dan:
I remember… I was in a series
called Linda Green. I had a really great
year. I did this series with Liz
