never ever going to happen, there was only
ever one thing I wanted to do.
Jason:
You had one path.
Yeah. But, unfortunately, when
I was 17 he died so he never saw what I
ended up going on to do. So at 17 he died
and then at 18 I moved to London.
Dan:
Jason: Having gone through drama
school, what was the first significant role
you picked up?
Dan:
Well, when I left and went straight
to the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC)
along with two other guys in my year and
did, as they call it, ‘spear carrying’. Parts
with not very many lines, in fact, did I
speak at all in one of the plays? I don’t
know. You’re there to pad out the stage.
They go around the drama schools and
they get what they think is the pick of the
crop, but then for 18 months you don’t
really get to do anything. But what you are
doing is you’re absolutely working your
