proud. We’d done a fantastic job there
and to see this record go climbing up
the charts and then I am doing the old
music TV show, The Old Grey Whistle
Test with Roger and Top of the Pops
and all sorts of things as well as hearing
it on the radio… that was it for me. The
dream had come true. I always see the
big magic when you get a first hit record,
you don’t even think of the money. It’s
nothing to do with the money and we
weren’t doing it for the money. The
money follows the success but it’s not
the driving factor. It was the hunger and
passion for being in the music industry. I
always thought that the real big buzz was
going to be hearing it on the radio, being
on TV.
What was the big buzz for you?
When I was living in Wykeham Terrace,
there was a club across the street on
the corner and it was called Sloopy’s in
those days. I remember walking over
to Sloopy’s and Giving It All Away, was
about number two or something in the
charts. I went over there that night and
as I’m walking through the building,
through a little corridor, there were these
two drunken sailors coming towards me,
arm in arm, absolutely off their heads.
They didn’t know me and I didn’t know
them and so I had to get out of the way
while they were coming towards me.
