Wellbeing It works on the immune and nervous systems enabling us to be more able to deal with the daily stresses of life. We can begin to calm down on a very deep level and as this happens we begin to see more clearly the true nature of things. Our judgment improves; we become more conscious of our habits, actions and reactions. With this in mind yoga can also improve our relationships with others and ourselves. As a teacher and student of this method I want everyone to experience this space and I often find myself in dialogue with people about it. If I was given a pound every time I heard “I would like to try it but I am not flexible enough” I would be significantly better off. This myth about yoga seems to permeate continuously. No doubt supported by the many practitioners and teachers who display postures in and out of the class that many of us will never be able to do. All too often we are indoctrinated to think that unless I can get my leg behind my ear, or roll up on to my shoulders or even come into a forward bend with straight legs that I am not doing yoga. But is that really true? Or is that just the ego talking? My experience tells me that my lower back never likes to do a forward bend with straight legs. Actually my lower back feels much more supported and able to relax by bending my knees. Similarly, when I do dog pose my lower back feels better when I have my legs bent and heels high and when lying in Savasana (at the end of the practice) my body, and mind, relaxes more deeply when I put my hands on my belly and very often when my body is not symmetrical. As long as the intention is self-enquiry it is still yoga. From my experience a good teacher While the physical benefits of yoga are both fruitful and endless, yoga is a journey of self-enquiry rather than self-improvement. will only always guide the student to see the signposts that they have experienced for themselves from their own practice.
