The Catalina Ski Race is like the Baja 1000 of ski racing. It’s the true test of your skier’s endurance and pushes your equipment to the limit. The grueling 62 mile run to Catalina Island and back has some of the roughest water you can imagine. Race day starts at 6:30am with launching the boat, last minute prep and then it’s off to the boat parade.

My adrenaline starts pumping as the National Anthem plays and motors start to rev. Sitting at the starting line along side 60 other boats, I start scanning the harbor for the best water and decide which line to take. Five minutes to go, two flags come up alerting the skiers to put their ski on. One flag drops giving a two minute warning of the start; this is when the skier enters the water.
