Graphic Design BA (Hons)
Graphic Design is the study of
creative and visual problem solving.
This course will encourage you
to develop a range of informed
approaches to communicate with
audiences across varied platforms
and media.
Futures
Graduates work in areas such as
typography, editorial design,
information design, wayfinding,
exhibition design, creative coding,
and design for promotion. You will
graduate with strong technical expertise
and be ready for a broad range of
careers in the creative industries.
The Course
This course allows you to work
cross-media and examine graphic
design together with specialisms
such as coding and data visualisation.
We value individualism and encourage
concept driven work, showing a clear
understanding of design problems as
well as visual languages.
You will study through a mix of practice
and theory-based learning. This will
include lectures, seminars, workshops,
individual tutorials, self-directed study
and projects. Teaching staff and visiting
professionals will bring an industry
perspective to the course as well as
supporting you in your future choices.
All of our students graduate as creative
thinkers and problem solvers with a
strong understanding of audience
and message.

Illustration for Communication BA (Hons)*
Year One
You will build fundamental skills in
contemporary graphic design tools,
typography, information design,
creative coding and design for
promotion. We encourage you to
start thinking about your contextual
studies research throughout this year.
Year Two
You will gain advanced skills in the
graphic design process, developing
experimental approaches and
techniques. We set briefs that
encourage you to collaborate with
other students and help you to further
your contextual understanding of the
industry and graphic design.
Year Three
You will bring together your work in
an industry-ready portfolio whilst at
the same time being encouraged to
enter external competitions and
festivals. You will also undertake a
self-directed major graphic design
project for exhibition at the degree
show. We ask you to show your
contextual studies research and
thinking in a long form dissertation.

Illustration for communication across
commercial graphic design, advertising,
fashion, interaction, web and app
design and in animation and gaming is
increasingly ubiquitous - illustrators
are contemporary visual storytellers.
Futures
Contemporary illustration is positioned
at the intersection of graphic design,
advertising and publishing, fashion and
product design, animation and games
design. Illustrators create images and
narratives for print and screen and
are the creators of direct visual
communication. There are unparalleled
opportunities for image-makers to
work with time-based, sequential
and narrative forms. Contemporary
illustration practice is increasingly
integrated across the creative industries.
The Course
This practice-led course uniquely
prepares its graduates for entry into a
rapidly changing field of contemporary
illustration through the exploration of
ideas and themes across commercial,
social, political and cultural contexts
utilising narratives in compelling and
innovative ways. Ravensbourne’s
illustrators will comprise the most
experimental and creative practitioners
equipped to work across media and
formats, aware and informed by
illustration’s rich heritage yet forward
thinkin g in their understanding of
the application of contemporary
illustration in the 21st century.

course identifies the professional
scenarios and applications for the
illustrated image and prepares you
for entry into the creative industries.
Year One
This studio-led introduction to
illustration expands mindsets and
skillsets through workshops and
projects that explore ideas-
generation, documentation and
process experimentation and the
creation of image-making through
computing, animation, photography
and digital print. A programme of
industry practitioners and speakers
supplements and enhances the
core delivery.
Year Two
Year Two explores a more individual
approach to image-making and
encourages the development of
creative thinking and ideas generation,
combined with a deeper understanding
of the subject. The ability to have a
personal vision, a point-of-view and
philosophical stance is explored and
a range of electives help facilitate
collaborative projects with other
disciplines.
Year Three
The culmination of three years of
study in Illustration is channelled
into practical projects, increasingly
professional in scope. A range of
self-directed project solutions form
the basis, along with a major project,
of the final portfolio of work
appropriate to applied contexts
across a range of disciplines.
