Architecture BA (Hons)
Architecture is the design and
creation of new built environments.
This course combines art, philosophy,
technology and ecology with an
experimental approach to solve
problems connected to the places
where we live, work and relax.
Futures
Architects are most often employed
in the design of quality environments.
There are many different specialties
but you could work in architectural
and urban design, housing and office
buildings, building conservation,
heritage matters or community
development.
The Course
This course will give you an
understanding of both the
practical and theoretical aspects
of architecture. You will study the
design of buildings and the technical
aspects of construction alongside
how architecture relates to the
notions of live, work and relax.
You will learn through a mixture of
problem-based outcomes, design
studio tutoring, workshops and
traditional teaching. To prepare you
for the profession, we put an emphasis
on cross-disciplinary working with
other departments and completing
briefs as part of a team. Teaching staff
and visiting professionals bring further
industry perspectives to the course.

think about professional enterprise
and angles on problems of the built
environment. We encourage you to
start thinking about your contextual
studies research.
Year Two

urban design, branded environments,
rehabilitation projects, and the history
of the city. This will allow you to
enhance your practice and develop
your approach to your design work.
We set briefs that encourage you to
collaborate with other students and
create work as part of a design team.
Year Three
You will bring your learning
together in a final negotiated major
project, where you will investigate
and make architectural design
decisions. You will carry out a
negotiated project which takes the
form of a live brief. We ask you to
show your contextual studies
research and thinking in a long form
dissertation. You will leave with a
portfolio that shows your skills in
architectural design with a strong
emphasis on dual-use environments
that considers the use of technology
and ecology with an experimental
approach to materiality, structure
and form, and in areas of entry-level
architecture.
