He studied at the University of California at Berkeley and attended the School of Design in San Francisco, traveled to Munich to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and continued to the Academie Julian in Paris, France where he was considered a colorful character and earned the nickname of Carlos who traveled the city in cowboy outfits of spurs, chaps and a ten-gallon hat that was given to him by Buffalo Bill. 150.
