Millar a painter and etcher received awards three consecutive years in his late teens . He moved to New York City in 1883 and worked at the Art Students League and was a student of William Merritt Chase while studying at the Shinnecock School . He exhibited in Philadelphia , Boston and Chicago galleries as well as the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design . His works are represented in the Detroit Institute of Arts , Library of Congress , New York Public Library , and the Rhode Island School of Design .
