189. THOMAS POLLACK ANSHUTZ (American 1851-1912) “The Study of the
Sea and Sunset Over the Coast”, watercolor on paper. 11 in. x 9 in.

Anshutz was born in Newport, KY. He studied at the National Academy of Design under Lemuel
Wilmarth and later at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art under Thomas Eakins and Christian
Schussele. He joined the faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1881 where his students included
Robert Henri, John Marin, Frederick Judd Waugh and Charles Demuth. His paintings are found in
the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and
the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.
