138. ANNE RAMSDELL CONGDON (Massachusetts 1873-1958) “Church of
Litchfield from Thornton’s Ferry”, oil on artist’s canvas board, signed and dated in
pencil lower right Anne Ramsdell Congdon, 1925. 23 in. x 17 ½ in.
One of the finest talents of the Artists Association Colony, Congdon began her artistic career
painting delicate watercolor landscapes during summer visits to the island. She exhibited regularly
at the Easy Street Gallery through the 1940s and was instrumental in the early years of the Artists
Association of Nantucket, which in 1946 named her one of the five artists “of national importance”.
