233. THEO ALICE RUGGLES KITSON (Massachusetts 18711932) “Volunteer”, patina bronze depicting a soldier bearing arm, stamped The Henry – Bonnard Bronze Co. Founders N.Y. 1902, copyright 1901. Height 18 ¾ in. Base 5 ½ in. x 6 in. Born in Brookline, MA, Kitson (Nee Ruggles) studied both in Boston under Henry Hudson Kitson and in Paris under the painter Pascal and sculptor DagnanBouveret. She was awarded an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1888, and in 1895 was the first woman to be admitted to the National Sculpture Society. Among her works, the statue “Tadeusz Kosciuszko” can be seen in Boston Public Gardens, and “The Hiker” is publicly displayed near the gates to the Arlington National Cemetery in honor of Spanish-American War Veterans. 234. MARTIN MILMORE (Massachusetts 1844-1883) “Bronze Portrait Bust of Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner”, patina bronze, signed Milmore, 1861. Height 11 ½ in. Born in Sligo, Ireland Milmore immigrated to Boston, MA as a child. He began his art career as an apprentice under Thomas Ball and eventually became a leading Boston sculptor best known for his Civil War monuments. 111
