Personality Profile Sponsored by : Tshidi Amu Matlala goal-driven and committed “I am very passionate about skills development and I aim to one day use my own skills and qualifications to promote engineering skills development in South Africa.” T shidi Amu Matlala is currently employed at Bigen Africa as a mechanical engineer. She works in building services where she gets involved in the design of any mechanicalrelated system in a building. This includes everything from HVAC systems and wet services to fire protection, building gas pipelines and vertical transportation. A career in building services Matlala completed her BSc (Eng) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cape Town after which she started off as a graduate engineer in an oil and gas consulting company for about 18 months. After much consideration, she decided to switch to building services. “Infrastructure development is an expanding industry in Africa with growing opportunities to engage in innovative and green engineering methods,” Matlala says. “There is a need for well-versed local professionals who can produce quality products and I wanted to be part of that. I also liked the fact that I would be using my engineering skills to improve the lives of the general public.” Although still at the early stages of her building services career, Matlala has been involved in designs at Stellenbosch University, Tygervalley Shopping Centre, and Pathcare Hospital to name a few and is currently working on various Greenfield libraries and sport centres in Gauteng. For the love of the job Matlala loves what she does because unlike university where you just do calculations and simulate models and get a grade, she now actually gets to see the finished product at the end of the project. She particularly likes the systems engineering side www.hvacronline.co.za Tshidi Amu Matlala. where she gets to interact with other professionals to bring out a well-rounded product. “It’s not always easy but it is always stimulating.” So what motivates her? Goals! “I have goals to make a difference in people’s lives through my knowledge, skills and achievements as well as to contribute to this economy. It is only when I know what my goals are that I am able work at it diligently and pick up when I am slacking. As a believer, I always lean on God for the fuel to progress because I know that all that I do will be for Him at the end of the day.” When it comes to future plans, Matlala wants to be a specialist with a professional accreditation and is planning on completing her PR Eng.
