Associations SAIRAC visits new Imperial cold store By Ilana Koegelenberg SAIRAC Johannesburg organised a comprehensive tour to the new Imperial Cold Logistics premises for members to see how South Africa’s largest cold store operates. #SAIRAC T he the new Imperial Cold Logistics premises – a state-ofthe-art 25 500m2 facility in Linbro Park – was recently completed in just 18 months at a cost of R160-million. It is now one of the largest cold storage facilities in Africa, housing 37 000 pallets, operating 24/7 and offering flexible chambers that can be used for chilled, frozen and super frozen products, depending on clients’ requirements. The South African Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (SAIRAC) organised a tour on 15 April and a handful of interested industry professionals were allowed inside to see how things are done. From the impressive ammonia refrigeration plant room to the first-of-its-kind in Africa fire suppression system on the roof and even the advanced battery handling system (BHS) – visitors were reated to the full tour, led by Bob Vuletic of Multistage Cooling, who designed the impressive ammonia refrigeration system. Vuletic is also on the SAIRAC’s Johannesburg. Visitors got to walk around the various cold stores, equipped with huge jackets to ‘survive’ the extreme -25°C temperatures. The group even made their way up a cat ladder to inspect the finer inner workings of the plant while Vuletic shared his expansive knowledge and experience. Everyone was suitably impressed (and maybe a bit exhausted from all the walking) by the end of the experience. RACA SAIRAC Johannesburg recently organised a site visit to the new Imperial Cold Logistics facility. Note from the editor: This was an incredible experience and by far the most beautiful plant room I have ever seen. It was impressive not only in its sheer size, but the neatness and perfection of its layout and operation. Every pipe was marked and colour-coded, every www.hvacronline.co.za piece of equipment perfectly aligned and running smoothly. Definitely a quality installation that Bob and his team can be proud of – especially considering the short time frame they had to work with. A world-class job indeed! RACA Journal I June 2016 23
