A Glimpse into the 2017 Strategic Planning Meeting

From my perspective as a facilitator for the New Mexico Association of School Business Officials (NMASBO), I can tell you firsthand that your board and leadership are actively engaged in shaping the organization's future and ensuring

that the membership is engaged.

It is encouraging to see how

our collective work, which

started three years ago,

continues to see success

in various forms.

The 2017 planning

session did not focus

on by-law changes or

creation of transition

plans. Instead the focus

was on planning. The lack

of other “big ticket” items

allowed the board, with support

of staff, to address ways the existing

committee structure could address the

most pressing needs facing New Mexico’s

public school business officers.

The key items addressed during this 2017 Planning Session included testing the 2016 committee goals and adjusting/removing/adding goals due to success, relevancy or other more pressing needs.

Another success is the

commitment to the three-year

staff leadership transition

plan. Benchmarked with

other associations,

NMASBO's instincts

were spot on and the

process is on schedule.

A cloud of financial

uncertainty hovered over our conversations.

An ailing state budget,

still in the lurches as of

this article, coupled with

the recent state acquisition

of cash reserves from school

districts were heavy on the minds of

school business officers. However, the

uncertainty only seemed to strengthen the resolve of the group to increase value through sharing insights with school administrators and elected officials.

...your board and leadership are actively engaged in shaping the organization's future and ensuring that the membership is engaged.

Regarding NMASBO awareness and marketing, the board participated in an insightful discussion about the NMASBO value proposition. This served as the foundation for awareness and marketing discussions. Networking and sharing best practices, being a trusted voice to train its members and being a resource when assisting its members with licensure and renewal were some of the items identified in this conversation. The items identified during this time provided direction for the Communication and Training/Meetings Committees' discussions.
