verifiable, employment experience as a

school business official; or

4. A high school diploma or high school

equivalency credential and at least five years of verifiable employment experience working under the supervision of a licensed school business official and 40 hours of licensure credit for school business official license continuing education.

Upon satisfying these requirements, PED will issue a one year conditional license. During that year, an individual must complete a training program approved by PED. NMASBO’s Boot Camp is the approved program where one gains hands-on training to become a successful school business official.

To begin the paperwork process, visit the licensure bureau on NMPED’s website, or click here. Read all the information provided and complete the application selecting “School Business Official” on page two. Perform a background check, include required transcripts and fees, and send to NMPED.

If you are curious about SBO licensure but are unsure whether you have the knowledge to perform the job duties, read the School Business Official competencies in NMAC 6.63.12.9 . Then, begin choosing your NMASBO conferences based on new knowledge you would like to acquire or subjects with which you would like to become more familiar.

For those who have attended a NMASBO conference, you know the drill in order to get credit to meet New Mexico’s regulatory licensing requirement for school business officials. You select courses of interest, make sure you sign in and turn in your completed Training Course Hours form. A few weeks later, you go online to verify your hours and you receive a certificate in the mail. It may sometimes seem like unnecessary work, but it all revolves around requirements of PED School Business Official (SBO) licensure.

NMAC 6.63.12 is your resource for information regarding school business official licensure requirements. The training hours received at the fall and winter NMASBO conferences are courses that address required competencies of an SBO. Sixteen hours of continuing education are needed annually in order to remain eligible for and renew the license.

PED grants level 1 and level 2 SBO licensure, which is required in order for individuals to serve as a business manager, supervisor or director of accounting or bookkeeping in a public or charter school in New Mexico. The requirements for receiving this licensure are identified in NMAC:

1. A current certified public accountant

certificate; or

2. A bachelor's, master’s, or doctorate degree

in accounting, business, or a related field

with at least 24 semester hours in

accounting or business coursework from a

regionally accredited or department

approved college or university; or

3. An associate's degree in accounting or

a related field from a regionally accredited

or department approved ollege or university

including at least 24 semester hours in

accounting or business courses from a

regionally accredited or approved college or
