The New Mexico Association of School Business Officials Board of Directors were able to accomplish a large number of tasks during the recent 2016 Strategic Planning Meeting.

The accomplishments include reviewing the 2015 strategic plan and goals and updating the tasking identified in that document to be accomplished in 2016. The board also took an aggressive look at updating the Bylaws and Constitution for the organization as well as identifying a timeline to hire a full-time executive director.

To attempt, let alone accomplish, these items over a 13-hour period is quite an accomplishment. The next steps of implementing the items identified is where the real work of the work will begin.

With all members in attendance, the board identified these 2015 accomplishments:

- A successful Corporate Social Responsibility campaign launch

- Professional leadership and successful conferences

- Implementing a membership dues increase

- A successful transition of conference venues

- Development of a mobile application

- Increased interest in board service (evidenced by contested elections)

- Implemented member feedback into organizational service/operation

The board discussed several areas that were challenges and opportunities for 2016. The challenges and opportunities include:

- Strategic partnership is needed with CES. They realize that school districts are NMASBO’s bread and butter

- There is a need to look for ways to build member involvement in the association

- The leadership and conference should have an annual theme. Discussion focused on how a theme will help to build excitement among attendees and the membership. Along the same - discussion, it was suggested that the casino night was a big success

- K-12 education and budget (availability and priorities)

- Electronic elections were mentioned as something that is needed

- Level 3 B PED Government Licensure and reinforcing NMASBO relevance

Since the organization’s inception, its leadership has been contracted to a New Mexico-based association management company. The company’s leader effectively serves as the organization’s executive director as a course of the contracted services provided by the company. The company’s leader will be retiring effective July 1, 2018. The volunteer NMASBO leadership has made a commitment to hire a full-time executive director and make some other staffing updates in conjunction with the company’s leader retiring. The Board identified tasks and timelines to ensure the organization’s staff leadership and organization continue its forward progress.

In addition, the board of directors identified parts of the organization’s bylaws and constitution that needed to be updated. It will be presented to the membership later this year.

Finally, the board of directors identified new goals for 2016:

- Traning/ Meetings Committee: Boot Camp, Online Training and Vendor Traning

- Communication Committee: Awards Committee & Scholarship, Establish SFO Recognition Program,Website Updates and CSR Program

- President’s Committee: PED Licensure Discussions, Training Video, Membership Engagement and Succession Planning
