The next day I met with some of our New Mexico folks and went to several of the breakout sessions. I learned many things in those three days. First of all, NM is way ahead of other states when it comes to things like ACA and transportation. We are one of the only states in the nation that actually funds transportation. The SEG is a beautiful thing. New York, like many other states, has to create a budget and then they have the community vote on the tax rates. Can you imagine what happens when the community votes against the tax rate? Back to the drawing board! That could drag making a budget out for months. Lunches are a problem all around the country. Kids don’t like to eat what we are serving them everywhere.

This conference made me appreciate NMASBO. Our affiliate is doing an excellent job keeping ahead of the trends around the country. There are still states that don’t have this professional development resource. It makes me wonder how they keep ahead of school business trends.

Now that I’ve been to ASBO International, I want to attend the one next year in Phoenix. I’m looking into what it takes to become a mentor for the next group of scholarship winners. For those of you who can, please apply for the scholarship and attend. If you are ineligible to apply, find a way to pay for the opportunity. It was a great experience.
