Volvo Construction Equipment ( Volvo CE ) reported that net sales in Q2 2017 increased by 36 % compared to the same period in 2016 . Net sales in Q2 increased to SEK18 511-million ( 2016 : SEK13.63-million ), while operating income was also strongly up , at SEK2 460-million , more than three times the SEK810-million reported in Q2 2016 , equating to an operating margin of 13.3 % ( compared to 5.9 %). The second quarter of 2017 saw increased demand in most major markets , while order intake increased by 54 % in Q2 2017 and deliveries were up 49 %, at 17 472 machines . Order intake in China was particularly strong , rising by 221 %, driven by increased demand for SDLG wheel loaders as well as SDLG and Volvo excavators . “ Demand for construction equipment continues to improve in Europe and China , and also a clear recovery in the mining segment in many parts of the world ,” said Volvo CE president , Martin Weissburg .
Actom Turbo Machines installed 150MW turbo gensets for a new large open-pit copper mine in Panama ’ s Donoso District . This is the company ’ s first international contract , secured against tough international competition . Actom Turbo Machines was contracted for the mechanical installation of two Skoda Doosan ( Czech Republic ) 150MW turbo gensets , each comprising an integrated high- and intermediate-pressure turbine , a low-pressure turbine , a Siemens generator , a radial condenser , and auxiliaries . As the OEM only supplied an Installation Quality Controller , Actom Turbo Machines ’ installation crew installed the centreline of the turbo generator sets , starting with the inspection of the civil works , followed by the systematic assembly of the turbo generators in the form of transportable components and sub-assemblies .

Minerals students study processing at Haver & Boecker

Haver & Boecker recently hosted 22 University of Toronto minerals students , giving them a first-hand look at the industry . Haver & Boecker engineers presented on various aspects of vibrating screens and the screening process , and hosted a plant tour to reinforce what students have learnt in class . It is the second year that the company has opened its doors to enhance students ’ learning .
Professor Erin Bobicki wanted to give the students a chance to learn from industry experts and to see a full-scale vibrating screen , which cannot be done in a classroom . “ The students now have a much
greater appreciation for screening equipment and the science and engineering that goes into it ,” she said .
Dieter Takev , Haver & Boecker ’ s vice-president of engineering and technology , and Duncan High , processing equipment technology division manager , walked students through the basics of screening , material sizing , and vibrating screen mechanical performance . Students learnt about types of material and screening equipment , calculations for determining optimum performance , and the mechanical design of different components .
Takev also showed the group how mining and aggregates operations use Haver & Boecker ’ s Pulse vibration analysis software , developed by Haver & Boecker specifically to monitor the health of vibrating screens and detect irregularities that would prevent optimum performance .
“ Learning the process through which the screens are made was valuable , as was the opportunity to work with the vibration analysis system ,” Bobicki said . “ Probably most of the students would think of vibration analysis as a mechanical engineering task , but the truth is that mining and mineral processing are
very interdisciplinary and you end up touching a variety of functions within the industry .”
One of last year ’ s participants was hired by Haver & Boecker , joining their processing equipment technology team after graduation .
“ Our team takes pride in the innovation and testing that goes into each product design ,” said Peter Kilmurray , Haver & Boecker vice-president of sales , adding that the company will open the same opportunities to other interested educational institutions . “ We ’ re more than willing to spend time introducing future industry leaders to ways they can make a difference in the industry .”
