Dave Bennet, general manager of National
Asphalt plant in Pretoria North, describes
the process, “Between 95% and 96% of
the asphalt mixture consists of aggregate
with only about 5% being the bitumen that
holds the product together. The aggregates
used for the manufacture of asphalt
comprises a series of single size aggregates
ranging from 37.5mm to 7.1mm. The dust
required should be -5mm to dust with a
filler content on the 0.075 between 10%
