When your child is having difficulties in school it can be a symptom of a wide variety of issues. Many parents don’t
know where to begin and how to navigate what can be a very emotional situation. Working with the school and your
child is the most effective way to begin to address any problems. To help, follow these steps:
STEP 1: INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM
Get as much detail as possible from your child and from the teacher. Find out what both are seeing and if the
problem is due to one specific subject, class, or issue.
STEP 2: SUPPORT THE STUDENT
Let your child know that you want to help them address the problem. Your child needs to know that they are being
heard and that you care.
STEP 3: EXPLORE SOLUTIONS
Work together with your child and the teacher to develop options to solve a problem.
STEP 4: TAKE THE NEXT STEP
If you have tried to work out a problem with the teacher and there has been little progress, it is time to ask
for additional help. Ask the school counselor, assistant principal, or principal to bring another set of eyes and
support to the situation. You can request a meeting with an interdisciplinary group of professional who can make
recommendations, perform assessments, or consider if your child has an educational disability.
STEP 5: STOP AND CHANGE PATHS
It is time for additional resources if despite your best effort, the problem continues. Contact your School Liaison
for help finding the resources your struggling student needs.
