If you can care, we can give you a
career. Nursing demands
compassion and skill and this course
will fully equip you to give exceptional
care. With this highly ranked* degree
course you will be able to register
with the Nursing and Midwifery
Council (NMC) and practise as a
nurse.
BSc (Hons)
Nursing
As a nurse, you will be at the
forefront of healthcare, meeting a
broad range of people who truly
need your expertise and
empathy. Nurses are involved in
promoting health and preventing
illness in addition to caring for
sick and dying people. This can
take place in a variety of
environments, which include
health centres, homes and
homely settings and hospitals. A
career in nursing can take you
into leadership and management,
education and research, both at
home and overseas. Wherever
you choose to specialise in
future, as a nurse you will be an
advocate for the people in your
care. You will make a difference.
This course will prepare you to deliver
safe, effective person-centred nursing
care with confidence. Lectures, seminars
and simulation are used to facilitate your
learning about nursing and the evidence
that informs practice. You will use real
client and patient experiences as the
focus for group learning.
Year One focuses on the foundations of
professional nursing care. You will explore
a range of influences on health,
professional issues, skills for nursing
practice, and the science underpinning
care. You will begin to learn to meet the
needs of vulnerable people across the
lifespan, for example older adults, people
with dementia, disabilities or long-term
conditions. Placements in Year One are
currently in the community and settings
caring for older people.
In Year Two you will learn how to assess
and care for people as they cope and
adapt to ill health, combining science
subjects with nursing modules. Clinical
skills learning will prepare you for clinical
placements within hospital settings.
Year Three modules concentrate on the
care of people with complex needs and
increasing dependency in a range of
settings. Placements in this year reflect
this focus. You will explore healthcare
governance and research evidence
relating to effective, compassionate
nursing practice. You will develop
knowledge of the integration of health and
social care through engagement within
the voluntary sector.
In Year Four the focus is on clinical
leadership, care management and
preparation for registration. You will
complete a dissertation on an area
aligned with current healthcare priorities.
Opportunities exist for students to select
an area of clinical practice for their final
placement which may enhance their
future career. Over the four year course,
you will complete a total of 4,600 hours of
theory and practice experience which is
split equally.
