A few words from the Student President,
Stewart Sands
“When I first came to QMU to study BA (Hons) Events Management, I
was quick to learn that the Students’ Union was much more than just a
bar. There are so many opportunities to enhance your student
experience, from joining a sports team or society, to becoming a Class
Rep. In addition to organising a variety of social events, the SU also
offers a range of support services, ensuring that there is a real
community atmosphere at QMU.
Quick fact
While the bar and social space in
Maggie’s is an important part of
university and SU life, the SU as a
whole offers much more to
enhance your student experience
and develop your CV.

“In my first year I joined the basketball team, and later became a
member of the team committee. Being a part of the team gave me the
opportunity to increase my confidence, keep active and make friends.
Playing basketball was also a great way to de-stress when university life
got a little bit tough!
“In my final year I became more actively engaged with the SU and was
elected as Events Officer, allowing me to build experience relevant to
my course and put into practice what I was learning in my classes.
“After a year as Events Officer, I decided to run for Student President
because I wanted to make sure that all students’ views were heard and
valued, while continuing to improve the social and community
experience at QMU. Now, I’m looking forward to the year ahead as
Student President, representing our students and playing a key part in
the University’s support network.
“Being a student at QMU has been a memorable experience, and I’m
excited to continue my time here as Student President. I would
encourage all students to get involved with the SU and take full
advantage of the countless opportunities to meet new people,
challenge yourself, and learn transferrable skills that will support your
personal development as you progress beyond life at university.”
