Heart Song

As a child in Sunday School, we would learn little songs. One of the songs that I remember learning and have never forgotten came from scripture.

“Beloved, let us love one another for love is of God and everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God for God is love. Beloved, let us love one another. 1st John 4: 7 and 8."

What that taught me was that the foundation of everything is love. We can’t say we love God and not show love for our neighbor. The scripture in song says that whoever does not love does not KNOW God, for God is love.

Wow! Sometimes we ignore or dislike our neighbors. Remember that your neighbor doesn’t have to live down the road from you. Your neighbor can be your co-worker or someone from church. Sometimes we behave as if we are better than them, so we do not acknowledge or speak to them in public. Yet when we are in church, we speak eloquently about our love for God. Anyone who is guilty of this is deceiving themselves because it is impossible for you to love God and despise your neighbor.

Again, we learn this from scripture. If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. (1 John 4:20-21)

There are two commandments in the New Testament. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and the second it like it, love your neighbor as yourself.
