• The Tampa Bay area has seen population numbers
increase since being relatively stagnant during the
recession. Since 2010, the metro area added 192,000
new residents – nearly a 7.0 percent increase. The
majority of this gain was the result of net in-migration
from other states due to the return of employment
opportunities and Tampa Bay’s attractive qualities.

• Further, 19.0 percent of growth between 2010 and

Overall, this age cohort comprises 19.0 percent of
the metro’s population, but comprises 29.0 percent of
Hillsborough County’s population.

• Going forward, Tampa Bay’s population is expected
to grow 1.2 percent annually through 2030 – the
vast majority (63.4 percent) of which will occur in
Hillsborough County, followed by Pasco County.
// NET POPULATION GAINS THROUGH MIGRATION (2010-2015)
• Additionally, over the short term, downtown Tampa
is expected to outpace the region as a whole. Aided
by the nearly 1,424 residential units in the pipeline
downtown, population growth in Tampa’s core is
expected to increase 12.6 percent by 2020, or 2.5
percent annually.
• Between 2010 and 2015, more than 176,700 people
migrated to Tampa Bay, the vast majority of which
came through domestic migration; however, with
nearly 60,000 international migrants to Tampa Bay,
the region ranked ahead of large metro areas such
as Phoenix. Combined with Orlando, Central
Florida welcomed nearly 420,000 new residents
through migration.
