DIVE DEEPER WITH MICHAEL TOMPKINS
A
s a partner with Hutchinson Consulting, Michael Tompkins
has data on, insights into or advice for every aspect of a spa’s human
resource practice. This month, Pulse asked Tompkins for his thoughts
on leadership.
1. Assess the critical need, then jump to the ‘helicopter’ view! Once the im-
mediate crisis is under control, get out of the day-to-day and take a macro
look at the problem at hand to spot the opportunities. Often, a trip away from
the office or a daily ritual to clear your mind is the best time for mental clarity.
2. Honor your most valuable asset: your people. Find ways to acknowledge their contributions from a
personal and individual level. A personalized, specific handwritten thank-you note can be the best re-
ward of all. As a leader, bring yourself to the one-on-one level.
3. Reach out first! A true leader asks for help. Reaching out to your team for solutions, knowledge and
talent is the best way to drive company culture to your ultimate goal.
4. Share information and a plan as soon as you can. Allow others to poke holes and improve it, question
your information, assist in refinement and execution—this makes them inclusive, active participants
of the decisions being made for your organization.”
“LEADERSHIP AT ANY TIME, AND
ESPECIALLY DURING CHALLENGING
SITUATIONS, REQUIRES A LEADER TO
ACT AND THINK DIFFERENTLY.”
