Beyond the Mall and Monuments Washington, D.C. is more than just the capital of the United States—it’s the sixth largest metropolitan area in the country and has a median age lower than any of the 50 states. And while the museums and monuments of the National Mall are internationally known, there’s a lot to see in the District that’s not located between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. If you want to explore the city while avoiding the crowds, plan on visiting some of D.C.’s less well-known museums and sights. The National Museum of Women in the Arts houses an accessible, varied and impactful collection within walk- ing distance of the National Mall. The Smithsonian National Zoo, located in beautiful Rock Creek Park, is free to visit. And if you’re flying into Washington-Dulles and interested in aerospace, stop by the free Steven F. Udvar- Hazy Center—an extension of the National Air and Space Museum that houses the Space Shuttle Discovery, among other large aircraft. #ISPASTRONG MAY 2020 ■ PULSE 29
