IT’S EASY BEING GREEN
QUICK TIPS FOR IMPROVING
BEING AN ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS, sustainable or even regenerative
business isn’t optional anymore—it’s essential to compete for environmentally savvy spa-
goers in a crowded marketplace. Each month, Pulse will offer tips on going green, plus fun
facts about being environmentally friendly. This month, we’re featuring tips from Noel Asmar
of Noel Asmar Uniforms and the Hospitality Lifecycle Initiative.
HERE’S WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY:
1. Pick a Lane. As a spa director, commit to one initiative you and your
team can get behind that will help influence guest, staff and operational
behaviors. For example, want to conserve more water? Develop treatment
protocols that use less water, find more efficient ways to do your laundry,
etc. Support your initiative with awareness campaigns internally and
externally.
2. Align your brand with other like-minded brands. Product companies fo-
cused on organic ingredients or sustainable practices will not only support
your sustainability initiatives, but they will also help you communicate
these values more clearly to your customers. Collaborate with your product
vendors to help build-out some of your own sustainability goals.
3. Sustainable merchandising. Make it easy for your spa-goers to identify
the sustainably-sourced products available in your spa’s retail area. Spas
have a unique opportunity to become the experts in educating consumers.
Become known in your area for the greatest selection of eco-friendly or or-
ganic products. Share your success stories online and let people know how
your spa is making a difference.
4. Marketing Tip. Create a community to leverage your sustainability initia-
tives. Once you have ‘picked your lane,’ connect your sustainable initiative
to a community event in your area to broaden awareness and attract like-
minded customers. If your initiative is conserving water, you may wish to or-
ganize a staff outing to join an Oceans Clean event to help collect plastic
water bottles off the beach. Share this day with your clients and com-
munity—customers want to support businesses that support their com-
munity and planet. n
