Beauty was an essential aspect of wellness, and full-service salons—with haircuts, blow- outs, manicures and pedicures—were the way that spas delivered that experience to spa-goers. In 2020, though, it’s clear that changing notions of beauty—and its role in spa—have dramatically affected the prominence of the salon in the spa industry. The 2010 ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study reported that 66 percent of U.S. spas offered salon services at the time; the latest 2019 ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study reported that figure is now just 48 percent, an eighteen-point drop.
