WITCH HATS MOST PSYCHOTIC BOY BAND’Dom Bangay-Wilding
WE MEET ‘MELBOURNE’S
BILLED AS ‘MELBOURNE’S MOST PSYCHOTIC
BOY BAND’, Witch Hats will be hitting up
Shanghai on November 1st (at 390) and the
QSW Culture Centre as part of the Wood and
Wires Festival. We put a few questions to Kris
Buscombe (vocals, guitar) and Rob Wrigley
(guitar) and they sent us some of the longest
and most entertaining answers we’ve ever
seen. We’re fitting in what we can here, but
check online for the whole thing, which is
brilliant.
F
ull of dark humor, energy, and
described as ‘disagreeably loud,’ this
looks set to be one of those gigs that
you’ll remember for a while – at least the weeks
it’ll take you for your ears to stop ringing. Support
from Yang Haisong’s After Argument and Parisian
duo One Lick Less add to the joy at 390.
You went on a very successful tour of the US a couple
of years ago. What’s the most important thing you
took away from the whole experience?
I don’t know if I learned much on that tour. If I
did I’ve forgotten it! There’s so many different
angles that pop into my mind. It feels weird now,
as bands tour the USA constantly and it’s not really
that big of a deal, but to me that trip stands out as
one of the highlights of my life. I’ve always loved
music and planned to be in a band that played it.
To play around the USA for a few months seemed
like such an unattainable and unrealistic thing, so
to actually do it sent me nuts, like actual crazy. I
was an animal in a state of existence that fitted
me like a toxic glove.
We all know it’s a sadistic country politically and
sits proudly on its satanic throne of global society,
but as an actual country it’s the best place on
earth. The people are amazing, the landscapes are
mind-blowing.

It was very debauched, and it’s proven extremely
difficult to do more than once. We haven’t been
able to secure enough money to go again. When
we released our first album things were still
running a little hot in the music industry and
people were doing crazy stuff to save themselves
from the looming collapse. We were given a
$10,000 publishing advance and blew it all on
that tour. I think that Duncan (previous drummer)
really deserves all the credit as he literally booked
the whole thing by himself and did an amazing
job with it.
My imagination swells in that country. We
departed Australia with simple plans and left with
three months of insane travelling experiences.
Any cracking stories from that tour we can actually
print?
No probably not, all of my favourite parts involve
