The mid-lateral stripe in Vieja species is restricted to
the caudal peduncle. In addition Vieja species have
black markings on their abdomen (above the anal fin)
a nd at the base of the dorsal fin (connected in Vieja
maculicauda to form the famous “black belt”).

Throughout this article I have used the name synspi-
lum, it being a widely used name for this species. But
recently it has turned out that there is an even older
name for it. Research has shown that the names Cich-
lasoma synspilum Hubbs 1935 and Heros melanurus
Günther 1862 apply to only one species. Again the old-
er name has priority over the younger and sysnpilum is
therefore a junior synonym of melanurus. Following
the logic of this article the valid name is thus Vieja
melanura (Günther 1862), despite the fact that the
authors of the paper assign the species to Paraneet-
roplus. I believe this to be far fetched considering the
differences between Paraneetroplus bulleri (the type
species) and species I was talking about in this article.
