Paratheraps bifasciatus ( Steindachner , 1864 ) Common name : Red speck cichlid Size : 30cm TL Distribution : Atlantic slope in the Grijalva and Usumacinta river basin , Mexicio , Guatemala .
Paratheraps breidohri ( Werner & Stawikowski ) 1989 Common name : Angostura cichlid Size : 25cm TL Distribution : Atlantic slope in the Grijalva river basin , Mexico Notes : P . breidohri is the type specimen proposed for the complex Paratheraps . It has been suggested that the fish could possibly be a lacustrine variation of P . hartwegi ?
Paratheraps fenestratus ( Günther , 1860 ) Common name : Window cichlid Size : 30cm TL Distribution : Atlantic slope from the Rio la Antigua , Rio Papaloapan to the Chachalacas River Basin , Mexico . Notes : A pink or white morph is commonly found in the hobby from Lake Catemaco , Mexico . When first introduced to the hobby the fish was commonly referred to as sp . ‘ Conkel ’. There is also a line bred morph available called ‘ Marbled ’ fenestratus .
Paratheraps guttulatus ( Günther , 1864 ) Common name : Amatitlan cichlid Size : 30cm TL Distribution : Pacific slope , Guatemala Notes : P . guttulatus is a bit of a mystery fish as the type locality fish from Lake Amatitlan is a lost species . Specimens for the aquarium hobby are collected from the Rio Coatzacoalcos basin , which could mean they are either sp . ‘ coatzacoalcos ’ or P . zonatus populations ? It has also been suggested that P . zonatus could be a regional variation of P . guttulatus ? I believe all three species of fish need further diagnosis !
Paratheraps hartwegi ( Taylor & Miller , 1980 ) Common name : Tailbar cichlid Size : 20cm TL
Distribution : Atlantic slope in the Grijalva River Basin , Mexico .
Paratheraps sp . ' coatzacoalcos ' Common name : NA Size : 30cm TL Distribution : Atlantic slope in the Coatzacoalcos River Basin Notes : As of writing this fish is still un-described . The fish appears to be very similar looking to P . zonatus , however P . zonatus populations are Pacific side of Mexico . The fish needs further diagnosis to establish a valid status . My own gut feeling is that sp . ‘ coatzacoalcos ’ is more likely a variation of P . zonatus ?
Paratheraps zonatus ( Meek , 1905 ) Common name : Oaxaca cichlid Size : 30cm TL Distribution : Pacific slope , Tehuantepec River Basin , Mexico . Notes : It has been suggested that the status of Paratheraps zonatus maybe uncertain . Its link with the possibility of being a regional variation of P . guttulatus could possibly see the fish become a synonym ?
